Most businesses try to scale before they standardise

That’s backwards.

A simple framework I use with clients:

Stabilise Standardise Systemise Scale

Here’s where most get it wrong.

They jump straight to automation or new hires.

But if processes are undocumented: • Performance depends on individuals • Reporting lacks consistency • Training takes too long • Errors multiply under pressure

Documented, repeatable processes create predictability.

Predictability creates control.

And control increases enterprise value.

Businesses with centralised SOPs and defined workflows are: • Less dependent on key individuals • Easier to integrate with new systems • More attractive to buyers or investors • Able to scale without operational shock

You cannot build valuation on tribal knowledge.

If your growth plan doesn’t include structured systemisation, it isn’t scaling. It’s stretching.

Before you scale, ask yourself: are your core processes stabilised and standardised?
